I haven't had a Baker's cyst Pam, but heard of them. From what I understand there is usually something involved like arthritis and the swelling from this causes a build up of fluid. The woman I knew that had one said the pain was worse with movement but rest and keeping her leg elevated help. It did finally go away. I hope the cortisone helps to relieve the pain for you. Did they recommended any exercises or PT that may help?

Judy No PT or exercises yet! I go back in 6 wks if its not any better we will do an MRI. He said it could be a cartliage tear, or arthritis causing it. Or the cortizone shot could make the inflamation go away causing the cyst to dissolve. Thank you for the tips! Pam

A Baker cyst, also called a popliteal cyst, is swelling caused by knee joint fluid protruding to the back of the knee (popliteal area of the knee). When an excess of knee joint fluid is compressed by the body weight between the bones of the knee joint, it can become trapped and separate from the joint to form a fluid-filled sac, referred to as a Baker cyst.

These cysts occur most often in adults between 55 and 70 and in children between 4 and 7 years old.

Baker cysts can become complicated by protrusion of fluid down the leg between the muscles of the calf (dissection).

If you have some swelling located in the back of your knee; you may have a Baker's Cyst. This is named after a physician who described it first, not because bakers have these cysts.

A Baker's cyst, also sometimes referred to as a popliteal cyst, is a lump filled with synovial fluid (joint fluid) that forms behind your knee.
